Avon Lake is a city in northeastern Lorain County, OH, along the southern shore of Lake Erie. It is about 17 miles west of Cleveland, and over 25,000 people live there. Avon Lake is considered part of the Cleveland metropolitan area.
The area was initially settled in the 17th century, and the first European settlement was officially founded in 1786 by Moravian missionaries. After the 1818 Treaty of St. Mary’s, native claims to the area were removed, which jumpstarted more extensive settlement. It wasn’t until 1915 that Avon Lake separated from the rest of the Township of Avon to form the Township of Avon Lake.
